Army Body Fat Calculator: How the One-Site Tape Test Works
In June 2023, the U.S. Army replaced its multi-site tape test with a single-measurement method called the one-site tape test. Instead of measuring the neck, waist, and hips, soldiers now only need to measure the abdominal circumference at the belly button. This change, introduced through Army Directive 2023-11, was designed to produce more consistent results and reduce the misclassification of fit, muscular soldiers as exceeding body fat standards.
Calculate Your Body Fat Percentage
Use our body fat calculator to estimate your body fat percentage using tape-based formulas, including the Navy method.
How the Army One-Site Tape Test Works
The tape test requires two measurements:
- Abdominal circumference — measured horizontally around the waist at the level of the belly button. Take three measurements and average them, rounded to the nearest 0.5 inch.
- Body weight — measured and rounded to the nearest pound.
These two values are entered into the Army body fat formula to estimate body fat percentage.
Army Body Fat Formula (2023)
Men: %BF = −26.97 − (0.12 × body weight in lbs) + (1.99 × abdominal circumference in inches)
Women: %BF = −9.15 − (0.015 × body weight in lbs) + (1.27 × abdominal circumference in inches)
Round the result to the nearest whole percent.
Example (male): Abdominal circumference = 34 inches, weight = 185 lbs → %BF = −26.97 − (0.12 × 185) + (1.99 × 34) = −26.97 − 22.2 + 67.66 = 18.5% → rounds to 19%
Maximum Allowable Body Fat Standards
| Age Group | Male Maximum | Female Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| 17–20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21–27 | 22% | 32% |
| 28–39 | 24% | 34% |
| 40 and over | 26% | 36% |
These standards apply to soldiers on active duty. Accession standards for new recruits allow an additional 4% in most age groups — with the expectation that trainees reach retention standards within roughly 90 days of starting service.
ACFT Exemption
Soldiers who score 540 or higher on the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) — with a minimum of 80 points in each event — are exempt from the body fat assessment. This exemption accounts for highly muscular soldiers whose abdominal circumference may exceed standards despite their fitness level and physical readiness.

What Happens If You Fail the Tape Test
As of June 2024, the one-site tape test is the only authorized circumference-based method. The earlier option to request a confirmation test using the older multi-site formula has expired.
If you fail the one-site test, you may request a supplemental body fat assessment — if these resources are reasonably available at your unit:
- Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA)
- InBody 770 Body Composition Analyzer
- The Bod Pod Body Composition Tracking System
Soldiers who do not request a supplemental assessment, or who fail it, are flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). Failing to make progress in the ABCP can result in administrative consequences including loss of promotion eligibility and, in some cases, separation from service.
How to Take the Measurement Correctly
Small errors in measurement compound significantly in the formula. Follow these steps:
- Stand upright with arms at your sides.
- Wrap the tape horizontally around your waist at the belly button — not above or below it.
- Pull the tape snug but do not indent the skin.
- Breathe out normally before taking the reading. Do not suck in your stomach.
- Take the measurement three times and use the average, rounded to the nearest 0.5 inch.
Army vs. Navy Body Fat Calculator: Key Differences
| Feature | Army (2023 one-site) | Navy (traditional) |
|---|---|---|
| Measurements (men) | Waist + body weight | Neck + waist + height |
| Measurements (women) | Waist + body weight | Neck + waist + hips + height |
| Formula type | Linear | Logarithmic |
| Introduced | June 2023 | 1984 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can civilians use the Army body fat calculator?
Yes. The formula is publicly available and anyone can use it to estimate body fat. The Army’s standards and consequences only apply to active duty soldiers, but the calculation itself is valid for any adult.
How accurate is the Army one-site tape test?
The 2023 formula was developed from a study of over 2,600 soldiers and improves on the previous multi-site test by approximately 10% in accuracy. It still carries a margin of error of around 3–5% body fat depending on individual body shape and measurement consistency.
Is the abdominal circumference the same as the waist?
In the Army test, abdominal circumference is specifically measured at the belly button — not at the narrowest point of the waist. This differs from the Navy formula, where men also measure at the navel but women measure at the narrowest part of the abdomen.
