Dumbbell to barbell conversion chart
The conversion factor of ×2.2 accounts for the stability advantage of barbell lifting — a fixed bar requires less shoulder and core stabilisation than two independent dumbbells, allowing approximately 10% more total load. This ratio is most consistent for bench press.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate barbell plate loading manually?
Subtract the bar weight from your target total, divide by 2 to get the load per side, then work from the largest plate down. For example: target 120 kg, bar 20 kg → 100 kg ÷ 2 = 50 kg per side → 2×25 kg plates. Always load largest plates innermost (closest to the collar) and smaller plates outerward.
Can I use the dumbbell to barbell conversion for squats and deadlifts?
The ×2.2 formula is most validated for bench press. For squats the stability difference between a dumbbell goblet squat and a barbell back squat is much larger, making the conversion less reliable. For deadlifts, dumbbell deadlifts are mechanically very different from barbell deadlifts. Use the converter as a rough starting point, then adjust based on your performance on the actual movement.
What if my gym doesn't have certain plate sizes?
The calculator uses standard plates by default. If your gym has different plates (e.g., only 25 lb and 10 lb), the missing weight alert will show you how far off you are. Gyms with 'round' plates (5, 10, 25, 45 lb) will have more gaps than those with a full metric set. Some lifters carry fractional plates to bridge these gaps.
