Free TDEE, running pace & fitness calculators.
The answer depends on your body weight, height, and walking pace. A 70 kg (154 lb) person at moderate pace burns approximately 420–460 calories. A 90 kg (198 lb) person burns 540–590 calories for the same 10,000 steps.
| Body Weight | Slow | Moderate | Brisk | Fast |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 kg / 132 lb | 231 | 359 | 441 | 514 |
| 70 kg / 154 lb | 270 | 419 | 514 | 600 |
| 80 kg / 176 lb | 308 | 479 | 588 | 686 |
| 90 kg / 198 lb | 347 | 539 | 661 | 771 |
| 100 kg / 220 lb | 385 | 598 | 735 | 857 |
Height 175 cm assumed. Values in kcal.
The calculator uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method, the standard for quantifying physical activity energy cost:
stride_cm = height_cm × 0.414
distance_m = steps × stride_cm / 100
time_min = distance_m / speed_m_per_s / 60
calories = MET × 3.5 × weight_kg / 200 × time_min
| Pace | Speed | MET |
|---|---|---|
| Slow | 3.2 km/h / 2 mph | 2.0 |
| Moderate | 4.8 km/h / 3 mph | 3.5 |
| Brisk | 5.6 km/h / 3.5 mph | 4.3 |
| Fast | 6.4 km/h / 4 mph | 5.0 |
Stride length is the distance between successive footfalls of the same foot. The average adult stride length is approximately 41.4% of height. A 175 cm person has a stride of roughly 72 cm (28 inches), meaning 10,000 steps covers about 7.2 km (4.5 miles).
For higher accuracy, measure your actual stride: walk 10 steps at your normal pace, measure the total distance, and divide by 10. Enter that value in the stride override field in the calculator.
| Height | Stride (cm) | Stride (in) | 10K steps (km) | 10K steps (mi) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 155 cm / 5'1" | 64 | 25.2 | 6.4 | 4 |
| 165 cm / 5'5" | 68 | 26.9 | 6.8 | 4.2 |
| 175 cm / 5'9" | 72 | 28.5 | 7.2 | 4.5 |
| 185 cm / 6'1" | 77 | 30.2 | 7.7 | 4.8 |
| 195 cm / 6'5" | 81 | 31.8 | 8.1 | 5 |
The reverse mode in the calculator above answers this directly. As a reference:
| Calorie goal | 60 kg moderate | 70 kg moderate | 80 kg moderate | 70 kg brisk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300 kcal | 8,381 | 7,183 | 6,285 | 5,836 |
| 400 kcal | 11,174 | 9,577 | 8,380 | 7,782 |
| 500 kcal | 13,968 | 11,971 | 10,474 | 9,727 |
| 600 kcal | 16,761 | 14,366 | 12,569 | 11,673 |
Height 175 cm assumed. Use the calculator above for your exact figure.
For most adults, one step burns 0.03–0.06 kcal depending on weight and pace. A 70 kg moderate walker burns approximately 0.042 kcal/step. At brisk pace, this rises to about 0.051 kcal/step.
This metric is more meaningful than total calories alone when comparing walks of different durations or tracking improvement over time.
Approximately 400–500 kcal for a 70 kg person at moderate pace. Heavier people and faster walkers burn more. See the table above or use the calculator with your exact weight.
For a 70 kg person at moderate pace, approximately 12,000 steps. At brisk pace, around 9,700 steps. Use the Calories → Steps mode for your exact figure.
Yes — taller people have longer strides and cover more distance per step, which means more time spent walking and more calories burned for the same step count.
Wrist-worn trackers can be 20–40% off compared to metabolic measurements. MET-based formulas like this calculator (using height, weight, and pace) are generally more accurate for walking at known speeds.
Yes, gradually. 10,000 steps burns roughly 400–500 kcal daily. Combined with a modest dietary deficit, this creates a sustainable calorie deficit for gradual fat loss.
