Body Fat Percentage Chart for Men and Women by Age

Body fat percentage is a more accurate health indicator than weight or BMI because it distinguishes fat mass from lean mass. The healthy range varies by sex and increases with age — here are the complete reference charts for men and women across all adult age groups.

What Each Category Means

Essential fat

The minimum required for basic survival. Essential fat is necessary for organ protection, hormone production, vitamin absorption, and (in women) reproductive function. Dropping below essential fat levels causes serious health complications including hormonal disruption, immune system failure, and organ damage. Women require roughly double the essential fat of men to support reproductive physiology.

Athletic / Fit

Typical of people who exercise regularly and intensively. Strength athletes and bodybuilders often fall in this range during competition prep. Most gym-goers who train consistently fall in the lower-to-mid fitness or upper athletic range rather than the full athletic category.

Acceptable

The normal range for the general population. Within this range, health risks are generally lower and most basic health markers are typically normal. This is not the same as optimal — someone at the high end of acceptable may have metabolic risk factors, particularly if they carry significant abdominal fat.

Obese

Above these thresholds, risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and several cancers increases substantially. Note that clinical obesity thresholds based on body fat (≥25% for men, ≥32% for women) differ from — and are often more accurate than — BMI-based obesity classifications.

Simplified Body Fat Ranges (ACE) — Without Age Breakdown

If you want a simpler reference without age categories, the American Council on Exercise uses these general guidelines:

Category Men Women
Essential fat 2–5% 10–13%
Athletes 6–13% 14–20%
Fitness 14–17% 21–24%
Acceptable 18–24% 25–31%
Obesity 25%+ 32%+

Why Body Fat Increases with Age

Both charts show the acceptable range shifting upward at each decade. This reflects real physiological changes:

The fact that acceptable ranges increase with age doesn’t mean gaining fat is inevitable — regular strength training and aerobic exercise consistently slow this process.

How to Measure Body Fat Percentage

Method Accuracy Accessibility Cost
Skinfold calipers Good (with skilled tester) High (gym/trainer) Low
Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) Moderate (hydration-dependent) Very high (home scales) Low–Medium
DEXA scan Excellent (gold standard) Low (clinical setting) High ($100–300+)
Hydrostatic weighing Excellent Low (specialized facility) Medium–High
Air displacement (Bod Pod) Very good Low (specialized facility) Medium–High
3D body scan Good Medium (some gyms/clinics) Medium

Frequently Asked Questions

What body fat percentage is considered athletic for men?

6–13% body fat is the athletic range for men aged 20–29. This range increases slightly with age: men in their 40s and 50s in the athletic category typically fall between 7–16%. Elite endurance athletes may even drop below 6%, though this can compromise health if sustained long-term.

What body fat percentage is considered athletic for women?

14–20% is the athletic range for women aged 20–29, shifting to 15–24% for women in their 50s–60s. Female athletes can maintain lower percentages than this during competition, but very low body fat in women (below 14%) disrupts hormonal function and bone density.
