Pace Conversion Chart: km/h, mph, min/km, and min/mile

Running pace shows up in three formats depending on where you are and what app you’re using: minutes per mile, minutes per kilometer, and kilometers per hour. If your GPS watch is set to the wrong units, or you’re comparing times from a race abroad, you need a fast way to convert.

This pace conversion chart covers the full range of running speeds from a brisk walk to elite race pace. Each row gives you km/h, mph, min/km, min/mile, and projected finish times for 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon.

How to Convert Pace Manually

min/mile ↔ min/km

1 mile = 1.60934 km. To convert:

km/h → min/km

Divide 60 by your km/h speed. At 10 km/h: 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00 min/km.

km/h → mph

Divide by 1.60934. At 10 km/h: 10 ÷ 1.60934 = 6.2 mph.

mph → min/mile

Divide 60 by your mph speed. At 6.2 mph: 60 ÷ 6.2 = 9:41 min/mile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pace in running?

Pace is the time it takes you to run one unit of distance — either one mile or one kilometer. A 9:00/mile pace means you cover one mile every 9 minutes. It’s the inverse of speed: a faster runner has a lower (smaller) pace number.

Is a 6:00 min/km pace good?

A 6:00 min/km pace (9:39 min/mile) is a solid recreational running pace. It projects to a 30:00 5K, a 1:00:00 10K, and a 2:06:35 half marathon — above average for most age groups. For a beginner, it’s an ambitious goal; for an intermediate runner, it’s a comfortable training pace.

What does 10 km/h feel like?

10 km/h equals 6:00 min/km or 9:39 min/mile. For most people, this is a moderate running effort — not a jog, but not a hard race pace. On a treadmill, 10.0 km/h is a common starting point for a steady-state cardio session.

How do I change my Garmin from km to miles?

On most Garmin devices: Settings → System → Units → Distance → Statute (miles) or Metric (km). The pace display will update automatically once you change the distance unit.

What pace is a 30-minute 5K?

A 30:00 5K requires a 9:41 per mile pace or 6:00 per kilometer pace, equivalent to 10.0 km/h on a treadmill.
