Your ideal weight range depends primarily on your height, but also on your sex, body frame size, and body composition. This chart shows healthy weight ranges based on BMI 18.5–24.9 for every height from 4’10” to 6’4″. The four most widely used ideal body weight formulas are also included below.

Note on sex: This chart applies to both men and women. At the same height, men tend to be at the higher end of the healthy weight range due to greater muscle mass and bone density. Women naturally carry more body fat per unit of lean mass, so they often fall toward the lower end of the same range.

What Affects Your Ideal Weight for Height
Body frame size
Two people at the same height can have meaningfully different ideal weights based on bone structure. Frame size is estimated from wrist circumference relative to height:
Women:
- Height under 5’2″: Small = wrist <5.5″, Medium = 5.5″–5.75″, Large = >5.75″
- Height 5’2″–5’5″: Small = <6″, Medium = 6″–6.25″, Large = >6.25″
- Height over 5’5″: Small = <6.25″, Medium = 6.25″–6.5″, Large = >6.5″
Men (all heights over 5’5″):
- Small = wrist 5.5″–6.5″
- Medium = wrist 6.5″–7.5″
- Large = wrist >7.5″
Large-framed individuals naturally weigh more than small-framed individuals at the same height. The Hamwi formula accounts for this with a ±10% adjustment.
Muscle mass
The chart is based on BMI, which does not distinguish muscle from fat. A strength-trained athlete at 5’10” and 185 lbs has a BMI of 26.5 — technically overweight — but may have 12% body fat and excellent metabolic health. For athletes, body composition assessment (body fat percentage) is more meaningful than BMI-based ideal weight ranges.
Ideal Body Weight Formulas by Height
IBW formulas give single-number estimates rather than a range. They were originally developed for clinical drug dosing, not health optimization, but they’re commonly used as reference points:
| Formula | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Hamwi (1964) | 106 lb + 6 lb/inch over 5 ft | 100 lb + 5 lb/inch over 5 ft |
| Devine (1974) | 50 kg + 2.3 kg/inch over 5 ft | 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/inch over 5 ft |
| Robinson (1983) | 52 kg + 1.9 kg/inch over 5 ft | 49 kg + 1.7 kg/inch over 5 ft |
| Miller (1983) | 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg/inch over 5 ft | 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg/inch over 5 ft |
Example — 5’10” male using Hamwi: 106 + (6 × 10) = 166 lb (medium frame). Large frame: 183 lb. Small frame: 149 lb.
Better Ways to Assess Ideal Weight
Height-weight charts and IBW formulas don’t capture everything that determines whether your weight is healthy. These supplemental measures are more informative:
- Waist circumference: <40″ (men) and <35″ (women) indicates lower abdominal fat risk. More predictive of cardiovascular disease than scale weight.
- Waist-to-height ratio: Keep waist circumference below half your height (ratio <0.5). Works for all ages and ethnicities.
- Body fat percentage: Directly measures what matters — fat relative to lean mass. More accurate than any weight formula.
- Metabolic markers: Blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure tell you more about health risk than the number on the scale.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthy weight for a 5’4″ woman?
According to the NIH BMI table, a healthy weight for a 5’4″ woman (or man) is 110–140 lbs (BMI 18.5–24.9). The Hamwi formula gives a midpoint of 120 lbs for medium frame women at 5’4″, with a range of 108–132 lbs for small to large frame.
What is a healthy weight for a 6-foot man?
At 6’0″, the healthy BMI range corresponds to 140–177 lbs. The Hamwi formula gives 178 lbs for a medium-framed 6-foot man, with a range of 160–196 lbs for small to large frame.
